I'll Do Anything

Part 1

"Are you going?" Hilde asked as she snatched the invitation from Duo and reread it.

"Not sure." Duo commented as he turned and continued working on shipment papers. "Very busy right now. Especially at this time." Hilde studied the American a moment.

"Too busy to go to your best friend's wedding?" She challenged as she narrowed her eyes at him. "Come on. You haven't seen Quatre face to face in years. This stupid salvage yard can live without you for a little while. You could use a little vacation time."

"Look, I just don't want to go. I have too much work to do and with the recent lay off, I don't think we could afford to be short handed." Just as he finished his sentence, Howard walked by. It was almost quitting time and he was leaving the yard for the day.

"Hey Howard." Hilde called and he turned to respond. "One of Duo's Gundam friends is getting married. It's a week long event. Is it okay if he went?" Howard smiled at his braided worker.

"Sure. No problem. We can handle things here. Go have some fun while you're young. And give my regards to the happy couple."

"Now what's your excuse?" Hilde turned to face him.

"I just don't want to go." Duo snapped and left. Hilde ran after him.

"Why not? It's not everyday someone gets married. It's a special occasion, and he'd probably want you there." Duo said nothing as he made his way to his car. He had no intentions of going to the wedding. "You really should go Duo. You know you love a good party." He ignored her as he pulled off. It wasn't because of Quatre. Quatre has been like a brother to him since the day they met. Trowa wasn't the problem either. Even though they didn't really talk much, he had nothing against the Latin. Wu Fei never posed much trouble toward him either. He usually stayed to himself in the first place.

It was all because of Heero. Duo didn't know if he could face his former lover. It wasn't because he was intimated by him. It's just that he still loved him. In fact he never stopped loving him. Even after ten years, he couldn't bring himself to care for anyone as much as he cared for Heero. He tried a relationship with Hilde, but that was short lived. She didn't like the ideal of coming second to someone. So they both agreed to call it quits and just be friends.

He sighed deeply as he pulled into his driveway and climbed out of the car. He was greeted warmly by his neighbors. Usually Duo would return the greeting in his happy-go-lucky manner, but today that attitude wasn't following him. He forced a smile, a quick wave, and a 'hi' that lacked a lot of enthusiasm. Before anyone could say any more, he dashed into his house and closed the door. It was extremely rare for him to fall into a depressing mood, but when he did, there was only one cure for it. As usual, he was greeted by his black Labrador. The puppy leapt into Duo's arms and licked every inch of his face. More often than not, Duo would return the dog's affection with pats, pets, and rubs. This time, however, he just released him and walked into the living room. Throwing his keys on the coffee table, he turned on the TV and headed into the kitchen. The dog followed him, picking up toys to play with on the way. Only to be dismissed as Duo was continuing to ignore him. He half listened to the news from the television as he opened the refrigerator door. At first he reached for a bottle of beer, but as a after thought he dismissed it and grabbed the last fifth of vaka that he had.

After closing the door back, he made his way to the living room and plopped down on the couch. His four legged companion sat next to him and studied him. Wondering what had happened to his master. Duo picked up the remote and started to change the channel. Before he could, the lab playfully snatched the remote and jumped from the couch. Tail wagging, the puppy backed away from the couch and prepared to run if Duo chased him. Duo stared at the dog a moment. He wasn't in a playful mood.

"This isn't funny." He said coldly. "Bring it back." The dog barked and began to run away. It was a game they often played. When he saw that he wasn't being chased, he ran back and returned to his original spot. "Buddy, bring it back." The dog barked again, his tail wagging faster. "I'm not playing." Slowly Buddy walked over to the couch and prepared to return the remote. Just as Duo reached for it, he pulled it away again and began to run. "Buddy! Give me the damn remote!" Duo hadn't used this tone since his last battle. It sounded strange both to him and Buddy. The small puppy became frighten. He had never heard his dear friend use such a tone toward him. Tail no longer wagging, he timidly walked over to Duo and allowed the remote to be taken. Duo accepted the offering and then rubbed Buddy's head. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." His voice was softer this time. He patted the cushion next to him, and Buddy accepted it. As if to make up for the previous outburst, Duo began to scratch the lab's belly. In response, the pup rolled onto it's back, giving a full exposure. A small smile curved Duo's lips as he watched the hind leg start kicking from enjoyment.

After a few minutes of scratching, Duo opened his drink. He took a few gulps, then returned his attention to the TV. He randomly flipped through the stations, trying to find something interesting. All he found were cartoons he didn't like, a few talk shows, a couple of soap operas, and the news. Given the options, he returned to the news.

"Relena Dorlian is making headlines again. . ." The anchorwoman stated as she smiled widely. "However this time it has nothing to do with peace or the Colonies and Earth. She announced today her engagement to her ten year long bodyguard Heero Yuy." As she spoke a image of Relena and Heero appeared on the screen. Duo jumped to his feet, anger surging through him.

"You fucking bastard!" With that, he threw his bottle at the TV, hitting Relena dead between the eyes. The bottle shattered against the tube. The liquid splashing on the couple. "Damn!" Duo slumped back to the cushion, tears filling his violet eyes. "Shit that was my last bottle too, and I wasted it on her." He buried his face in his hands. Grabbing the remote, he quickly turned off the television. Buddy licked at the tears coursing down his cheeks, trying his best to make his master feel better. "Damnit. . . . . Damnit all to Hell!" Buddy yelped and jumped off the couch. He ran from the room clearly scared. Of all people for Heero to marry, he had to marry Relena. The one person Duo couldn't stand, and Heero knew it too. "Fuck this." He stood up and headed for his room.

As he entered, the phone started ringing. He chose to ignore it as he walked over to his bed. He reached between the mattress and pulled out his gun. Buddy stood on the threshold, he watched as Duo made sure that the gun contained bullets. Buddy dissolved into barking as the phone continued to ring. The barking was fierce, unlike his usually friendly barking. Duo ignored him as he sat on the floor cross legged. The barking became more urgent, as if yelling at the braided friend 'no'.

"This is Duo . . ." The answering machine picked up. "You know what to do. . ." A beep followed. Duo pointed the gun to his temple, as he was now being barked and growled at. Tears flowed from his tightly closed violet eyes.

"Hey Duo, it's me." Quatre's voice drifted from the speaker. The barking ceased for a moment. "I really would like to talk to you. If you're there, could you please pick up." His voice was soft and soothing, somehow pleading. "If you're too tired, I can understand though. Just call me when you get a chance. I do need to talk to you." As quickly as the voice emerged, it submerged, and was replaced by more barking. Duo opened his eyes and stared at the black puppy growling at him. His thoughts flew to Quatre. The Arab sounded so depressed over the phone. Could something be wrong? Did Trowa do something to him? His thoughts were interrupted as Buddy sprang toward him and snatched the gun. Before Duo could reacted, he dashed from the room.

"Hey. . ." Duo yelled as he sprang to his feet. "You stupid dog." He chased the puppy through the house. Buddy, gun still in his mouth, quickly ran to the kitchen and dashed through the doggy door. "Damnit!" Duo yelled at him as he slid into the back door. As he threw it open, he was greeted by Hilde. She jumped at the sudden door swinging open.

"That was fast." She commented lightheartedly. "I didn't even have to knock." Duo said nothing as he pushed by her. "Duo!" Ignoring her, he ran after his dog. Hilde had left the gate open, like she always did. Buddy was now at large in the neighborhood with a gun. Duo ran to the front of the house and looked both ways down the street, wondering which way the lab went. Hilde stopped behind him. "What's going on."

"Thanks a lot." Duo snapped, still looking both ways. "Do you think, just for once, that you can close the gate."

"It's not the first time he's gotten out. He'll be back." She didn't seem to notice what Buddy was carrying.

"You don't understand." Duo breathed. "I need him back now!" He looked once more before turning to Hilde. "You go that way. I'll go this way. Find the damn dog!" With that, he darted off in his direction. Hilde watched him for a moment before turning to her appointed direction.
